The challenge of effective teamwork

Effective teamwork is a necessary part of any successful organization or business. And yet, successful teams do not come naturally – most teams face common challenges such as:

  • team conflict
  • ineffective communication
  • lack of a cohesive culture & vision
  • time-consuming meetings with little results
  • inadequate use of individual strengths
  • poor morale
  • leadership or followership dilemmas
  • and many others, all of which directly and negatively affect individual, team and business performance.

Most managers agree that teams rarely fail because of poor knowledge, skills or intelligence. So where to start to address team challenges?

At the root of the issues listed here are the psychological differences and preferences of people.

All of us have natural preferences about how we process information, form beliefs & opinions, make decisions and draw energy. Lack of understanding of one’s own and one’s team-mates’ preferences is a fundamental impediment to team success.

Equipped with better knowledge of self and others, and with the resulting behavioral competencies for navigating team challenges, can the team then learn & apply team-building skills or develop and implement team strategies and actions plans.

I assist with a variety of proven approaches to foster successful teams.

My Approach to Facilitating Team Success

I use a three-pronged approach to facilitate team effectiveness and success:

MBTI team assessments and workshops: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) journey commonly starts with individual assessments of the team members to determine their psychological type and understand personality and preferences of self and others better. Through my workshops teams then learn to use their insights about individual and team preferences to tackle challenges and improve team performance. I offer a whole range of workshops that explicitly relate MBTI principles to the actual challenges of teamwork (and other related workplace topics), develop strategies that overcome typical challenges and leverage the potential of the team.

Team Coaching: Coaching is a dynamic process, a conversation between coach and coachee(s) to help people achieve positive change, and to set and achieve goals. It enables people to gain greater clarity in their life and work, and to develop goals and strategies of their own accord, as opposed to having them imposed. Coaching can be one-on-one, or with a team.

One of the various models I use for team coaching is called the CO-CREATE Team Coaching Model. This model guides and fuels the conversations and activities that take place during the coaching sessions. Successful team coaching leads to improved quality, efficiency, and collaboration within the group. Furthermore, your team will implement actionable strategies faster, increase productivity, and ultimately lead to greater performance for the organisation.

Team Skills Training: Although most team problems are not the result of lack of skills or knowledge, our initiatives sometimes reveal areas where individuals and teams can benefit from specific soft skill trainings. Conducting these trainings as a team has the benefit that it will align skill levels of all team members, and all will use the same approach and language; this leads to improvements in productivity, efficiency and communication. As trainer and facilitator I conduct an organization’s existing skills training curriculum, or propose from a whole range of proven and popular soft skills trainings, such as Decision-making, Influencing, Negotiation, Time Management and many others.
